TIPS: How to Associate KMPlayer for Media Type Files

File type association in Windows XP is very easy and Pretty Straight forward. But in Windows vista To Associate it requires steps. In Vista there is a "DEFAULT PROGRAMS" Which controls which application to be opened by which program. There is a new API for that in Windows Vista. You  may Have to perform Registry Entries to Perform Those.

 

There are a couple of things you should do, before you can fully associate or control the association of KMPlayer in Vista.

FIRST

In Vista, Right Click on KMPlayer Icon and Run as Administrator

Right Click on KMP and Go to Preferences and In preferences go to Association

Click on Defaults to load the Icons. Then Select on the files you wish to associate or Select All Files.

Reason to Run as Administrator on Vista : KMPlayer has to store the file Association Details in Windows Registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT) which has access only when accessed as administrator.
In case if your icons are not refreshed you may have to clear your icon Cache by going to your system Drive –> Disk Cleanup –> Thumbnails.

After this most of the files that are not earlier associated becomes associated to KMPlayer. However some files .mp3, .wmv, .avi files refuse to get associated. To change that, make to always open with KMPlayer, the Icon will Change Automatically.

This should almost solve the association problem. But You do not have control in Windows Way which means, you cannot control association using DEFAULT PROGRAMS.

SECOND

The next thing you should do is to bring the KMPlayer in Default Programs List.

 

For that Run RegEdit and then  go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –>  SOFTWARE –> REGISTERED APPLICATION

You Should add a Key Called KMPlayer and Type the String as shown in the Following Image.

and Also Need add a Folder Called KMPlayer then Add Sub Key Called Capabilities –> and then Add Sub Key FileAssociations then add All List of Files.

To Simplify there is a registry Key that has created. Just Download this and Run, It will ask to ask whether you want to merge, Click YES. then it will automatically appear in Default Programs List.

Click On Run

Click YES.

 

Now go to Default Programs .

Click on Set your Default Programs

Select KMPlayer

Now you can Choose the Associations.

KMPlayer – one of the Best and Most Versatile Media Player

These days playing media on a computer system is very common. Now a days many people are using computer as a main Media Center and for me it has always been. I always like to any movie VCD or DVD or Other media on my computer system. Now with my Computer LCD Screen is of 22" Size (21" of My TV) I rather avoid watching TV. In future even if I buy a bigger size LCD TV such as 37" I can provide an input to the new TV viz my HDMI port in my computer system or By TV-Out of my Computer System. The reason to use computer system for playback is 1. Easy to use 2. Full Control 3. Can Play anything (almost all video formats).

With the widening media formats, some devices support one type of format, others the other one.

Now coming to the topic, I have been using Winamp earlier to play mp3 Songs, after which I totally switched to Windows Media Player from Version 8 onwards. I found that Windows Media Player was stable and produces good output. Plus the good support of Library, I just did not think of other players. I would definitely say still Winamp is also a good media player but my preference has changed.

The problem with Windows Media Player is the lack of Customization, or Very less Feature support. It will play media for sure, but wont play all. Then I came across KM Player. This is a kind of player I was expecting for. This player is made on basis of Winamp with lots of additional features. This page would get filled up if just mention each features. Here is the context menu.

You can select the Rendering Mode depending upon the system. I have tested with HD Video as well, which plays quiet well but 1080p has some jaggies. Any way it is being constantly updated and hence all bugs can be reported, hope the team will fix.

When Pressed Tab it displays the stream information, Video Stream Codec, Current Bit Rate, Frame Width and Height, and Everything.

When Pressed ALT + J it Displays All the information about the Video/Audio.

KMP (KMPlayer) supports 5.1 Audio type and can also UpMix Stereo to 5.1 type using Output Audio Configuration.

The Sweeney Todd Trailer was coded with h264 codec with AAC Audio. If you notice the CPU it is 72% but for normal video it is much less than that. Secondly since I am pulling out the info by putting on the TAB which fetches some amount of CPU and hence 72%. Normally the CPU Usage is much much lower.

 

To upmix 2 channel audio to 5.1 you may configure like this

It supports Matroska container format as well. The above is the screenshot of a Matroska Media File With H264 Video Stream and 5.1 AAC Audio and Also with Chapter and Subtitle.

It also supports many Winamp Plug-ins by default. Go to Plug-ins and set the Plug-ins Directory.

 

Above this it supports playlist, It has built in Winamp Media Library and so on. What can we expect more from a media player. But still, if there is any feature that is good can be requested in their forums. The support is quiet good and the forums moderator reply to queries and thus making more friendly.

 

The Minus Points of this are

1. Library is not so good.

2. Some playback Issues, sometimes.

3. Skin is Good but not Great.

4. Sorry to other OS Guys, It is only for Windows.

5. Audio Playback can be improved by Audio Effects. There are audio Filters that already are there but I don’t find it great.

 

 

So According to me I consider this as one of the best media players I have ever used. and I rate as

I have been looking for a possibly the best the Icon Resource Editing Tool. With the Release of Windows Vista, The Icons Contain a Special format which contains a 256 x256  pixel icon, with a PNG COMPRESSION and with Alpha Channel. In Windows XP the size of the maximum size of the icon is 48 x 48 Generally.

As far as the ICON EDITORS I used Axialis Iconworkshop was the best Professional Icon Editing Tool. Axialis Supports both Windows and Mac type icons. You may convert one format to another using Axialis.

I would first develop images in 256 x 256 PNG format in Photoshop or Related Applications and Design the Icons. Using Batch Process it is possible to create different size of icons from the image.

Axialis Iconworkshop does not extract 256 x 256 icons from the resources, such as shell32.dll of Windows Vista. But with ICOFx you may extract icons of 256 x 256 pixels from any resources. Also you may batch create Images from the Icons Extracted. It Creates Images for all sizes that is extracted.

Now with the release of leopard apple has introduced 512 x 512 px icons. This is not supported in ICOFx. The Fonts of size greater than 256 x 256 is not supported in ICO Fx.

An excellent Icon Editing tool. Exellent Features and on Top of that it is free. I personnaly thank Attila Kovrig for developing a wonderfull tool.

Pros :

1. Batch processing and other Excellent Feature sets.

2. 256 x 256 Pixel format support.

3. Free.

 

Cons:

1. Does not support 512 x 512 px Icons or Icons greater than 256 x 256 px Size.

2. Do not have a provision to crate Icon Library or Icon Resource DLL.

3. Not a great User Interface. (Desn’t Matter though).
